Psalm 131 is a treasure to me. I don’t know how many nights this Psalm has brought me such a great sense of peace and, like an infant with his mother, I’ve been able to rest my mind and sleep.
My daughter, Amelia, is turning 6 months old this coming Thursday. That means she’s going to start attempting to eat real food. We are pretty excited for the delight of messy faces and the classic spaghetti mess pictures we’ll get to take. While we are no experts at this point on weaning, I do understand the picture being painted for us in this song.
A Weaned Child
A baby that isn’t weaned wants mom for food and won’t rest until he gets it. But when a baby that is weaned wants mom, he just wants mom. He wants nothing more than to be held and to enjoy being with mom. That’s the picture in this Psalm. David has become like a weaned child with the Lord. He brings no request and he ask for no explanations. He simply wants to be with his heavenly father.
The Heart of Worship
That is the heart of worship. It’s to bring nothing and want nothing but God Himself. If you have found it difficult to worship lately, maybe you need to simply rest in the finished work of Jesus and just be with the Father.
Psalm 131
Spend some time reading Psalm 131 over and over again. Trust the sovereignty of God. Rest in the goodness of the Father. Fix your gaze on him. May the Lord bless you and keep and make His face to shine upon you and give you peace.
